10 Best Kid-Friendly Hikes in Manitoba

Steep Rock, Manitoba

Some of our favourite hikes in Manitoba:

  1. Bois-des-Esprit in Winnipeg - fun place to explore and keeps kids searching for carvings in the trees.

  2. Elk Island in Elk Island Provincial Park (near Victoria Beach) - total hike is 17 km but we just hiked to Elk Island and not on it. So we hiked about 7 km. Is it a walk, is it a hike or is it a swim? Or all three! The trail to get to the island is so much fun for kids because it involved walking along the shore and in the water.

  3. Flinty’s Boardwalk in Flin Flon. It’s a 5 km loop. Kid friendly because there are fun features that kids will enjoy and explore such as the boardwalk, outlook, wooden stairs and rocky outcrops!

  4. Gull Harbour Lighthouse Trail in Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park.  It’s 5km there and back. Fun to see the lighthouses and all the rocks to throw in the lake.

  5. McGillivray Falls in the Whiteshell - It’s a 4.3 km loop. It’s rocky, lots of scrambling, hard and fun, waterfalls at the beginning of the hike but sometimes it’s just a trickle.

  6. Ominnik Marsh Trail in Riding Mountain National Park. It’s a 1.4 km loop trail. Kids love this hike because there is a boardwalk and thus lots of time is spent near the water- bring your nets and explore the marsh!

  7. Pine Point Trail in the Whiteshell. It’s a 7.7 km loop trail. Take the fun rocky way there and the easy flat way back. The rapids are so much fun! Take time to hang out there.

  8. Spirit Sands at Spruce Woods Provincial Park. It’s about 2 km to the sand dunes. Why kids like this hike? Because of the sand dunes!

  9. Steep Rock Trail (short trail along the shore) in Steep Rock. It’s 1.4 km out and back. Follow along the rocky limestone cliffs and shore. Kids will love the scrambling, rock throwing and caves.

  10. The Caves Trail at Clearwater Lake Provincial Park (near the Pas). It’s a 1 km trail loop with lots of space to meander. Nature’s wonderland for kids and adults! Walk through crevices, little tunnels and big rock walls. Climb, scramble and explore the caves. Find a path to the lake and spend time throwing rocks in the crystal clear lake.
